THIS RACE IS FOR THE ENTIRE COMMUNITY & HIGHLIGHTS TEEN MENTAL HEALTH
The state of teen mental health across the nation is urgent. According to the CDC:
-
More than one in three high school students has experienced sadness or hopelessness, a 40% increase since 2009.
-
Every day, almost 4,000 children and teens attempt suicide.
-
Suicide is the second leading cause of death for teens ages 15 to 19.
-
More than half of parents and caregivers express concern over their children's mental well-being.
In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, the Teen Race of Hope has been created by teens with Hope for Depression Research Foundation to:
-
Share facts about depression and treatment
-
Fight the stigma still surrounding mental health
-
Fundraise for advanced research on depression
-
Reinforce connection in school communities, because that is a powerful protective factor in future mental health
"Young people who feel connected in middle school and high school 20 years later have better mental health …. are less likely to use substances and are less likely to attempt suicide. School connectedness is a very powerful protective factor."
-- Dr. Kathleen Ethier, CDC Director of Adolescent and School Health
